Chap. #6
Perspective: Ralph
Beastie?
I didn’t know what to expect of this so called Beastie. Was this true? Did Sam and Erick really see the beastie or was it that they were scared out of their wits and it got the best of them. No matter what they said it got everyone’s attention. I don’t know whether to call this nonsense or maybe it is real; I can’t put my finger on it, not yet anyway. The twins described the beastie as a big monster with claws, teeth, and wings and it looked like he was sitting down sort of like a gargoyle. The description of this monster struck fear into the littluns’.
I could also see the others Quiver with fear as well. Jack, with no hesitation what so ever, explained that we should hunt for the beast ourselves. I said, we haven’t got any way of knowing how to hunt or catch it. This thing doesn’t even make tracks, so how could we possibly find it? I decided to go alone at first, so I grabbed my spear and headed into the creepers. I didn’t even really know what to do or how to feel. All I knew was I needed to see if this idea was as ludicrous as it sounds.
I told the others to form a group and go search in another part of the island. Before I left, I asked Jack if there was any part of the island he hadn’t gone to. Jack replied the only place I haven’t gone is over by the rocks on the other side of the lagoon. From what I had known, is that Jack would have told us if he had seem any mysterious sightings of this so-called Beastie. Finally, I started my search through the jungle. As I walked, my mind cluttered with thoughts. I hadn’t really thought about what I was going to do if I even saw this monster. When I finally got to the rocks, I braced myself for what I might see. I clenched my spear and slowly tried to walk along the scattered path to an enclosed area just over the rocks. My palms were sweating, I began to breath fast and my heart began to pound.
I lunged toward the clearing and saw nothing. Maybe I scared him off or maybe there is no Beastie at all. I tried to remember what Simon had said at our last meeting, maybe he was on to something. What if the Beastie is us? I ran back to camp to see if the others had any luck. Obviously, they were hoping that I was the one who had found it. Jack, Piggy and the littluns sat on the logs looking at me. They were just as baffled as I was, so for now I guess we’ll have to wait to see if we really can find this Beastie.
