Chapters #13-15 in the perspective of Mrs. Dubose

I was sitting lost in a deep pool of thought, lost in a traffic jam of my own imagination. Ms. Jessie had just given me my medicine, so I sat as I tried to entertain myself by fiddling with rumors thought and imagery. I was slowly withering away as I sat till my bones disintegrated inside my body. In the distance I could see two childlike figures I assumed the two ghostly shapes ought to be Scout and Jem Finch. Oh how those two wretched demons make my skin crawl, I wondered what those two delinquents were up to know. They were full of mischief, always up to no good. They’re lucky their dad is a lawyer or they probably be rotting in jail by now. I waited patiently for them to stroll down my street I waited like a hunter waits for a nice big buck to stroll within range. As they approached I stopped them dead in their tracks I asked were they were going at this hour. They told me they were walking into town for what reason I could care less, I replied “playing hooky I suppose” they smirked and Jem sassed me in return. That boy ought to be slapped upside the head for such remarks, he should know better than to respond to an elder in such a manor. He ought to be taught some manors to behave like a civilized being. For it ain’t his fault his Negro lovin’ daddy can’t teach him a damn thing yet he can fight for those dirty niggers. This seemed to aggravate Jem. He clenched his fist as if he were about to do anything. I brushed them off as they continued I thought to myself, how even though I truly despise their very presence they are the only company I have. Jesse called me in for my medicine and I blacked out. Once I awoke it was almost dark. I peeked outside my window to see that my flowers were destroyed. I figured it would be those two, I also saw a broken baton on the grass. I immediately contacted Atticus and requested that Jem read to me for a month as a payment.

Chapters #8-9 in the perspective of Francis

We was a waiting for Atticus, Scout and Jem to come to the Finch landing for holiday. I was a talkin to aunt Alexandra bout Atticus and she done told me that he’s defenden some nigger in court ha he’s a disgrace to the Finch name everybody says so. He not teach his kids nothing or they’ll be just as messed up as he is. He’s nothing but a sad nigger lovin’ fool and I hear Scout and Jem are straight shootin his way. Pitiful souls they're so thick they don’t deserve to carry the name they're nothing more than a downfall if you ask me. I waited patiently for them folks to arrive late as usual they were never well mannered or punctual for that matter. Once they came I started to talk to Scout and try to arrange a civilized conversation if that was even possible. Her family can act like complete savages sometimes. I simply picked the freshest catch and asked about the court case. And almost instantaneously she went on a spiraling rampage I could have sworn I had seen her foam at the mouth. I made a quick comment to poke some fun at her so I called Atticus a “nigger lover”. I don’t see what part of that got her pantyhose in a knot, but somehow it did. She’s a brainless lunatic who can’t control herself like a civilized being. Why the only thing separating her from a coldblooded gator is the fact that she has thumbs. She tried to attack and claw at my face so I ran and hid in the kitchen. I waited and as I waited I felt as thought if I sat long enough she would blow off some steam, or get board and wonder off. A few moments passed and I could no longer hear her so I peaked my head out. She was still there. I had asked if she was done she said she was finished, I didn’t believe that cold hearted snake for a second but I couldn’t stay and cower. I heard aunt Alexandra call my name now was my chance I ratted her out as soon as possible about all of the horrible things she did to me. Auntie took her aside and gave her a quite stern talking to by the looks of it I reckon she told her to back up off of me. I was untouchable for the time being if I know my auntie I know that she has a very watchful eye. I strutted toward her with a grin and my head held high and I said one final time “nigger lover”. In a split second it felt as though my upper jaw was split in two I could hear the crack of bones and the loss of teeth. It sent a shockwave down my spine as I let out a horrid cry. And if that weren’t enough she began swingin at me Uncle Jack had to pin her down like a rabid bulldog. I went with auntie to dress my wound and that was the last I saw of that maniac.

Immigration Project Reflection

Immigration Reflection

I thought that I made a good choice in choosing the book Brother I’m Dying. I actually found myself enjoying my book from the very beginning. I liked how it started off with a crisis, so it kind of throws you off guard at the very beginning and also how even after they finally get to America, they still have very many hardships to overcome. I learned that you can always change to something you want to be, but it is impossible to change who you are, because you can never forget who you were to begin with for if you do, you might as well have never existed.

I believe that in some ways just blogging about it instead of the sheet was better because it seemed like more people did them then when we had the sheet, so there really was no reason why anyone should not be able to complete one if everyone has a working computer. I did feel that the meetings were a good thing to get everyone caught up or if someone was lost or didn’t understand something. That being said, I think that we should have probably had two, maybe three check-in meetings to hopefully grasp other ideas and to get a deeper meaning out of our peers about the book. It would be a way to get peoples thoughts going again when the book gets a little dry. These would be a good way to refuel people’s thoughts and jumpstart their interest a bit more.

I found it very funny that even though everyone in our group read the same book, the interpretations and reactions as well as comments and responses to certain things, were so very different from one another. Just how everyone can just pull something different out something completely the same was just so phenomenal to me. A lot of times I asked myself, “Are we reading the same book?”

For my art piece I wanted to choose the biggest and deepest part of my book and rip it out from the pages and writing and lay it gently onto a blank white canvas. I wanted to do this so that all may enjoy what the book was all about, for what is a book with no meaning in its words. It’s the same as a treasure chest without its gold or diamonds; an empty trunk. I chose to paint what I thought the moral of the story was so I could bring the heart and soul of the book out for everyone to see whether they read the book or not. I wanted them to see my painting and already have an idea of what the book was about. I tried to paint the struggle between losing what they newly obtained, and losing what they already had. I think that the two sceneries fading into each other really brought out the “push and pull factors of either place.

During the interview process of this project I felt as though I had many problems with contacting my interviewee, I could never get a hold of him or he wouldn’t reply to my emails. My original person was from Latvia and I was very interested in learning about a place I never even knew existed, let alone all the wonders from that place. Places so wonderful like manors and castles dating back as far as the year 1205. It felt as though I was pulling teeth to get some answers and the whole time I'm thinking, has he responded yet? Am I going to be late on my assignment? What’s going to happen? I had to switch all my research and papers to Panama where a different person was from and I had to interview a different person. I had to do background research to find out things like how Panama is the most southern of Central America, Panama is south of Costa Rica and north of Colombia. The Panama Canal allows a passage from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. Panama is just a little bit smaller than South Carolina. It is has chain of mountains in the Westside and hills throughout the interior. There are extensive forests in the Caribbean area. I found out that Panama’s government is a Constitutional Democracy.

I learned that Panama was explored by Columbus in 1502 and by Balboa in 1513; Panama was the main shipping point to and from South and Central America in colonial days. In 1821, when Central America fought against Spain, Panama joined Colombia, which had declared its independence. For 82 years, Panama attempted to break away from Colombia. Between 1850 and 1900 Panama had 40 administrations, 50 riots, 5 attempted secessions, and 13 U.S. interventions. After a U.S. proposal for canal rights was rejected by Colombia, Panama declared its independence with U.S. in 1903. The common foods in Panama include ohaldres (pancake things) pollo (chicken), ceviche (raw fish in lemon juice and cilantro), patacones (fried plantain slices), corvina (a white fish from the Pacific), and camarones (shrimp). Though a variety of fruits are grown in Panama, fresh fruit is not served in restaurants as often as in other countries; fruit can be purchased in outdoor markets and at stands along major roads.

I also learned that total population of the Republic of Panama is almost 3,191,319. Mestizo is the largest population in the country. The other minorities of the country are Amerindian and West Indian, white and Amerindian. Spanish is the official language of the country. However, English is also widely spoken in various regions of Panama. Their music is very much appreciated in Panama. The different forms of music in this country are salsa, reggae, merengue, vallenato, etc. However, the local music of Panama such as folklores are also popular here.

Overall, I have learned a great deal of how America came to be from its discovery and first settlements throughout the immigration to Ellis and Angel Island and the Triangle Trade system all the way to our fifty states we live in today.

Book Review
The book Brother I’m Dying by Edwidge Danticat, is a remarkable book about family love, loss, and exile, as this family struggles to stay alive and to stay together. As they move from Haiti to America in order to escape a horrible political situation that has now made Haiti; their home, unsafe for them to live their lives there any longer. As they begin to make their journey to America, they struggle to try to stay together, but when their family starts to split apart their plan takes a turn for the worst. Now their plan risks not only them losing each other but also jeopardizes them losing themselves and who they are. The only thing left holding them together is the love that they all share for one another.
I think this was a thrilling and life-changing book just to see the human minds will to strive no matter what at its best was truly breathtaking. I believe that this is a very easy book to enjoy for all. It has drama, love, passion, thrills and chills. This book will keep you on your toes and on the edge of your seat. It is suspenseful, like when Edwidges’ uncle Joseph is seconds from death from his pulmonary fibrosis. Or the passion and love they share like when they must split up in order to get to America, yet they wait and still find each other and reunite stronger than ever. They had such passion for each other that no matter how large or how difficult the obstacle they never gave up and they never gave in.
I enjoyed the plot of this book and how it starts off with a BAM, someone is pregnant and someone is dying. Instantly you’re sucked into the book like if you woke up in the mall in the middle of a free for all sales at Christmas Eve. It goes little by little, you are fed something juicy, but just enough to get you by and then when it starts to slow and fade it gives you a little more. Therefore, you don’t really expect what’s going to happen next or you’ll predict something and it will end up being something you didn’t even expect. So it keeps you guessing and keeps you on your toes.
I think that overall this book is one that I recommend to all who love to read. This novel is filled to its limits with everything one solitary book is capable of obtaining. It has a fascinating and life-changing story on how much everyone is capable of succeeding and how far everyone is able to go as long as they are willing to put forth the effort. Nothing in life worth having comes easy if you are willing to fight for what you want in time you will be rewarded.

Brother I'm Dying #6

Pg. #261 Paragraph #6 “It feels as though I've been sleeping on a bed of ice for days.”

He knows its time and he’s good to go but it’s hard to think about something like that how incredibly terrible he must feel.

Pg. #266 Paragraph #1 “let the people rejoice at your fathers wake tonight before they cry at his funeral tomorrow”

This will probably cushion the blow but definitely won’t stop the hurting. That’s for sure this isn’t the easiest thing to accept in ones life.

I think that these people have gone through one heck of a time and deserve the best great things need to come there way very soon

Brother I'm Dying #5

Pg. #225 Paragraph #1 “his anxiety sent us on a renewed search.”

I chose this quote because its like this epidemic was like a jumpstart one last drive to finish the race in order to give all you have left.

Pg. #245 Paragraph #1 “we can all go back and bury his ashes on his own soil with Tante Denise.”

I picked this quote because it was their way of celebrating I guess the loss. (I don’t know if celebrating the right word but I don’t know any others).

I think that it would be a great mountain to climb and is a horrible loss. Something like this has rendered souls broken beyond repair they really need to stay strong.

Brother I'm Dying #4

Pg. #156 Paragraph #2 “When bob called to tell me that papa was in the hospital, I leaped out of bed and boarded the next plane to New York”

I chose this quote because it was a drastic part of the book she knows that these are his final days on earth, and this might be his time. I'm sure that her skin is crawling and her hearts racing as she receives this message. I think that she doesn’t know what to do or where to go or even how to breathe at this point. I know that if someone I cared about might leave me I would try really hard to even stay sane.

Pg. #207 Paragraph #1 “I wanted very much to be in New York with my father, so I closed my eyes and imagined myself there; I am sitting on the edge of his bed and were watching my fathers’ favorite game show, The Price Is Right, on television.”

I chose this quote because her father is getting worse especially with the stress of the uncle dying isn’t really helping him recover. Now it’s sort of a waiting game to see what happens next. I bet eats probably eating away at the whole family.

I think that maybe both the uncle and the dad might die. And possibly on the same day or something strange like that.

Who do you think will die? Do you think they’ll be o.k.? What will happen to the rest of the family?

Brother I'm Dying #3

Quote #1 Pg. #144 Paragraph 7 “And because of this the angel of death did not visit this particular woman again for a very long time”

I chose this quote because she said it then had a stroke later and died. Tante Denise probably knew it was her time and was there to say she was ready.

Quote #2 Pg. #172 Paragraph 2 “It’s a physical sweep of the streets”

They describe this trashing of people diers smashing houses with bulldozers and torching. And show what they really are all about. Nothing much, nothing more.

I think that they may want to go back and leave America to see what they can do to help. Personally I understand where there coming from but also I really think that they should stay it doesn’t sound too safe

What do you think they should do? Should they stay or go? What do you think will happen if they go back? Why?

Brother I'm Dying #2

Quote #1 Pg. 77 Paragraph 1 “He loved you so much” she would say out loud at the end of a story “He left you with us”

I chose this quote because it kind of shows the connection the have between each other the care and trust for one another. I think that it’s a sign of appreciation of her being in her life and how she treasures it.

Quote #2 Pg. 129 Paragraph 3 “Do you see your children? My father blurted out as though he’d been waiting a long time to say it. Do you see how much they’ve grown?”

I chose this quote because It shows that they are all happy to see with their own eyes that the newest members of the family are thriving and full of life. They are all living their lives happy as can be and no matter what happened, happen, or is soon to come their together.

I think that it’s going to be all good for a while then I think the dads might die soon enough. This would be a very great struggle to overcome and they know that they need to move forward and prepare for what lies ahead. Instead of what is already done.

My question is what do you think is going to happen to the dad? Do you think he might die? What do you think might kill him? Do you think that there is a bit more to his fibrosis?

Brother I'm Dying

Quote #1 Pg.3; Paragraph 1: “I found out I was pregnant the same day that my fathers rapid weight loss and chronic shortness of breath were positively diagnosed as end-stage pulmonary fibrosis”

I chose this particular quote because I feel that it’s like boom and kicks the story off with a bang. This hit me of guard like wait what?... Huh… what’s going on? Wait a minute this grabbed my attention completely I didn’t know what was going on all I knew was something… pregnant… fibrosis. So of course I wanted to see what all the commotion was about. I felt that this was very effective as a “Hook” in order to get the reader to immediately become interested. Its like if you woke up in the middle of Manhattan the night before Christmas there’s so many things going on so fast you feel like your heads going to explode.

Quote #2 Pg.47; Paragraph 6: “my father got out of the car to hug me. He was breathing hard when he reached down to touch my still-flat belly. Don’t make her sad my mother said.”

I feel that this is sort of a problem what was it was there something wrong it’s been quit some time now she should be at least showing by now shouldn’t she. I think she knows it too and her mom and her dad all know. This made me worry if the baby would survive? Then I asked is she pregnant? Is she ok? What will happen to the baby? Is there a baby? I thought to myself if the baby was born would he be small of unhealthy. I couldn’t wait to find out.

I think she’s either not really pregnant or she has the baby and its going to be really small or sick. Something just seems wrong or is likely to go bad.

Question: do you think the baby’s ok? Do you think she’s lying about being pregnant? Why?

The Jewish Stride

I have learned that over the ages, many people have come a long way to reach society as we now know it. They have gone through many hardships regarding their Jewish Culture. After visiting, The new museum, my eyes opened a little wider as I saw a new culture grow from the beggining to modern day society. I saw a lot of their culture and was supprised to see some people that were Jewish, that I never would have guessed. People like, Dr. Seuss and Albert Einstein. They have gone through Holocaust segregation and war, but still this day they stand strong. They made great strides in the past and have many more to come. They have given a lot to come to America and have made themselves part of World History. From the fields of entertainment like the play, "Fiddler on the Roof" all the way to the fields of Science like Albert Einstein.

Immigrants

I think an immigrant is a person that comes to America for work, fortune, a new beginning and freedom. Immigrants usually came to America for a new beginning and a last chance at an opportunity. This was the glory land full of wealth, fortune and a chance. Our country offered freedom, democracy and a fair government with equality and people's rights. It was a way to freedom and opportunity. We also have a lot of diversity and culture within our country. We also have a killer assortment of food. We have different religions and freedom to live the way we please. My family is originally from Guadalajara, Mexico and some from Barcelona, Spain a long, long time ago. I am the 5th generation of my family born in the U.S. I don't really know if I have any cousins or other family members from other places, I really don’t think I’ve met my whole entire family yet. I think I have too many to track down.

History

In the Mingei International Museum, I thought that the Bonsai tree was seemed to be so big. I liked how they used the surroundings around it to make seem like it was this huge tree but in reality, it was a tree on top of a coffee table. It was the shadow and the spot light that gave the whole illusion; all that focus was so immensely powerful the way the shadow covered the table as if it were consuming the land. The platform it was on made it look like it towered over the table. In the exhibit of Black Womanhood, the piece that stood out to me the most was The Initiation Staff the first thing that had struck me was the woman on top because it kind off explains the story of what it means. I felt a change in position like I was receiving a gift. The staff tells a story of becoming a mother. This signified that the mother was ready to accept her new role and was to obtain the responsibilities of motherhood

Fahrenheit 451

This book was about a Fireman named Guy Montag in a sort of a futuristic time setting were in this case the firemen start the fires. Guy’s job is simple a little kerosene here and there then one match and poof. In this time period reading is illegal and no one is sure why, so Guy is supposed to burn them. One day Guy picks up a book and reads it knowing what he’s been missing he decides to take a stand, but we don’t know if others would take too kindly to this act can Guy make a change.

I would recommend this book because; I thought that this book was eye opening suspenseful dramatic and had a good moral to it. The only thing I would have to say I didn’t like was that at some points you had to re-read in order to understand what had happened. Overall this book had good characters I did think they could have given Guy a better name.

The book was very enjoyable it had its parts where it either didn’t make sense or it got a bit dry. I liked that it tells you to not be blind to the limitless possibilities around you like how something like reading can change the world. I liked how guy stood up against all odds and saw the error of their ways. I feel that Guy discovered how great life was and sort of wondered why it had all vanished and why cant we get it back.

This was a book that you might consider reading if you like that day after tomorrow sort of books. This will keep you on your toes with a lot of questions you’re dying to have answered. I think this would be a book for a two week vacation or rainy day or even if you’re a person who just likes to read for fun that’s cool to (I just wouldn’t do it.)

Book review

This book was about an Irish family that wanted to come to America and was faced with the hardships of the new world to them they left their world. When Rose makes a decision to stay while her mother goes home, and she sent off with her little sister Maureen to see if she can fit in or become an American.

I would not recommend this book because; I did not find this book interesting what so ever. It was boring and the plot was a little wishy-washy to much drama. It was just tragedy after tragedy and no break it’s like the family was doomed no matter what they do. The whole story was plain and there was only one semi-exciting part. I would only recommend this book if you have a total book worm personality and you’ve read every book known to man except this one.

The book wasn’t a complete heap I am sure some one in the world would find it interesting. I think that if you like family tragedy books you could enjoy this one. I found it hard to enjoy because the subject and over all writing didn’t catch my interest it was to bland nothing more that ordinary. There was one part I found pretty appealing I liked the fire in the building, it was so suspenseful kept you hungry for more. One other thing I found that was interesting was when they came to America and had their eyes opened with a button hook it made my

This was a book that you need an acquired taste in books. This shows the reader that you might not enjoy it but also it could reel you in. I thought the “HOOK” wasn’t very good and didn’t set one things for sure this fish did not bite. They need to change their bate because the one their using isn’t very appealing.

Finally all I have to say is that I don’t recommend this book and I didn’t enjoy it. In fact I would rather read a dictionary front to back and memorize it. Then have to read this book ever again. If you like it good for you I for one do not. Overall this book had it’s moments that kept me on my toes at all times I waited to see what would happen next some parts however did get a little dry and uninteresting.

Lord of the Flies
Ch #12
Perspective: Simon

It’s Okay

I sat there and watched what were they doing yet I could do nothing to stop the evil being committed here. It was excruciating and I knew this was coming the beast was us and it was let loose amongst my friends. I saw it eat away till it completely controlled them there was no going back there was no way back. Jack had taken over and now it was everyone against Ralph they were hunting him. He was alone and with no one to aid him he was vulnerable.
I saw that they had planned to cut off his head and put it on a stick just like the sow. I couldn’t watch what they wanted to do to him was disgusting I hope Ralph will be okay I do worry about him. Later I saw that samneric were exploiting the plan to Ralph then they blew his cover what were they up to. All of a sudden all of the savages had jumped out and chased Ralph as he made a dash for it. Then he was lost so jack said to burn the island in order for him to die or come out of hiding. After a while I worried about Ralph did he burn then he sprung from the creepers and kept running.
They all chased him until they all came face to face with a naval officer he said he would take them home. I felt I sign of relief it was all over, they’re going home.

Lord Of the Flies
Chap. #11
Perspective: Jack

I AM CHIEF JACK
Yes! we’ve just taken that fatty’s specs now we control the fire now they’ll have to ask us for fire now. Slowly we begin to overpower Ralph’s pathetic little group soon I will be chief of this entire island and they shall worship me or die. I don’t care what they think of me I will mot be questioned anymore I’m tired of being the shadow of that imbecile Ralph. He’ll follow my orders from now on I am the only way out of here for I control the fire I have the spec’s and I rule this island! I know that no one would dare to challenge me once Ralph’s out of the way, and this will surly happen very soon.
That next day after we raided there camp site the had the nerve to slither our way. I could smell that pig and Ralph from a mile away. I saw them and hid in the bushes and waited I saw everyone at the gate watch out for there arrival I looked up and saw roger with both hands on the lever. As they walked up to the wall I saw them being questioned by my guards. Then Ralph began to yell and I heard my name so I walked out. They looked like a bunch of bum’s trying to look nice and one of them had a sock on his head, cant imagine what on earth he was trying to get at.
They immediately questioned me that just like Ralph he irritates me like a mosquito that always comes back even when you flick it away. I tried not to loose it; it was not worth it. Then before I new it this had sprung into a fist fight. Piggy crouched and shook like a cornered puppy. Then Ralph started to throw rocks at them and out of his excitement he pulled the lever the giant boulder struck piggy and he fell of the face of the cliff and splattered on the rocks. that’s what’s in store for who ever questions me. Then Ralph took of running now it was only him.
